    even though the show was already "didn't think this would be good, but it is" the movie STILL surprised me. Really expected it to suck. Even the art wasn't more than... 5% worse than the show. 1:14 did you call Cadance Crystal? I can't really throw shade, nobody can spell her name right because it's a really clumsy pun. Most of the time you're lucky if you don't see "Candace" or "Candance." and even weirder, her full name is Cadenzia.. So how is that not Cadence with an E? whatever. 1:23 cosmic forces? more like cosmic horses. thank you i'm here all video long

    Interesting that you brought up Washington, DC as a comparison for why the Federation President wouldn't be dealing with a strictly Earth-centric emergency, when in the Constitution, Congress has exclusive jurisdiction over laws in DC, and the DC mayor and city council only exist at the permission of Congress - so in a way I wonder if something similar happened with Earth's government after the Federation formed, where control was slowly given away to the Federation President and Council as Earth found itself with far less problems that a full planetary government would be needed for (when most bureaucratic and logistical needs could be taken over by the Federation)

    You know how the Captain isn't supposed to go on away missions? Riker did it as soon as he was acting Captain...and was captured. Different historians are specialised on different aspects of a time period. Politics society military etc. Finding a historian specialised on XX century culture might not be that hard in TNGs era. Since XX culture included a lot of sci-fi involving aliens there would probably be a pretty healthy field of studies analyzing this due to the fact that in TNG aliens are a common everyday reality. So seeing how humans imagined the future would be of interest.

    No space pirates seems like an odd rule. It's not like ST shied away from other cliches, or that it has to be a cliche. What about an episode where Picard has to deal with some kind of civilization where, because of weak rule of law and valuable resources in the area, piracy is rampant and respected. Maybe he can't solve everything, at best he accomplished his mission and got whatever the Federation wanted and has to leave knowing it's not enough.

    As an alternate option involving Thomas Riker, imagine this: We start the episode with the scene we only hear described in the real episode: Picard, under cover, is asking questions in a seedy bar when Baran and his crew take exception to this. There's an argument, then a fight, Picard is shot, and we see him seemingly vaporized. Cut to titles. Then, on returning, we see Picard wake up on the pirate ship. Only instead of Riker finding Picard among the crew, Picard is surprised to find Riker helping Baran. In private, Riker tells him that Picard was overdue back from his leave, so he came looking for him and got captured by the pirates. Riker tells him that he did some fast talking and the crew doesn't know who he really is; they think he's a corrupt junior officer who was involved with an artifact smuggling scheme. From here, we follow the two of them for a bit as they try to unravel what's really going on before cutting back to the Enterprise and their investigation of Picard's "death." An investigation being led by one Commander William T. Riker. The Riker being held prisoner with Picard is actually Thomas. Thomas, who *isn't dirty,* I think it's important to say. He's just impulsive and not as experienced as Will, and he got in over his head trying to help someone and is now trying to lie and scheme his way out of it. Only Picard knows Will well enough to figure it out ahead of time. Together, they save the day, Thomas learns a *First Duty*-style lesson due to Picard being disappointed in him, and Data doesn't mutiny because of a joke.

    • @TheZetaKai
      @TheZetaKai 7 годин тому

      That's actually pretty good, and much better than what we got in the episode. The only problem would be how to preserve the episode's best aspect: the tension between Data and Worf. It could be done with your premise; you'd just have to get our Riker off the ship for a while, perhaps by means of the second ship idea that SFD had.

    • @CanuckWolfman
      @CanuckWolfman 6 годин тому

      @@TheZetaKai Conceivably, you could do it by making Data acting XO and shifting the source of tension from "you are undermining me in front of the crew" to "you are undermining me in front of Riker and making him question my ability to do the job." Or, alternately, change the Starfleet outpost to a Starfleet science ship. Have them take some casualties during the raid and have Riker assign Data and Worf to command the ship to either get them clear of the AO or have them help with the search.

    One thing I will give this movie that sets it apart from other films like it. There are consequences IN the series from the fallout of this film. This adventure serves for the impetus for the school, which draws in not only 6 new characters into their own core cast setup, but sets up roles for others who had been hanging around, like Starlight, and introduces a new antagonist who will stand with some of the early shows best. That said, that is not PART of this movie, that is future writers seeing the potential for story telling and running with it. And that's yet more characters the show will honestly not do enough with, which is the odd thing about this franchise at this time. We talk about it, but almost everyone you speak to will point out, we wanted more WIDE shots of this world, because they characters were awesome, and we wanted to see the world that made them.

    To the credit of the TOS producers, they got the Screen Actors Guild involved after John Barrymore failed to show for filming instead of just taking one for the team and moving on. Ultimately, the SAG ruled in favor of TOS and suspended Barrymore's acting credentials for six months. As for Robert Brown....I guess that's the best they could get on short notice. Even so, this episode is an easy skip for me. 😕

As something that can be used to get claps, - but no there is a pain knowing that a time, place, situation aspect of life with such wonder or beauty or joy, and it has passed and cannot be returned to ever. I have an photo album in called one perfect day wtih photos from a day i had returning from holiday with my wife and first born who was about 2 and a half, . I struggle to look at it wothout tears - and i have a happy life, and thank God for that day. Heck, I like the entire Scene of Kirk talking to the sane Lazarus. Perhaps the only moment this Episode kinda comes together. The "The Ship" salvage claim also isn't worth calling out because it's delivered as the transparent BS it is. Salvage rights between states exist only as agreed upon by treaty, and no such treaty exists between the Federation and the Dominion. For opposing belligerents in a declared war, the rules are very different. One of the things I like about Sisko's character is that for as much as he doesn't respect the greasy dissimulation of Vorta negotiation, he gives them back as good or better on many occasions - perhaps ironically, he's a more skillful diplomat than most of Trek's cruiser captains, historically a post conferring something very close to plenipotentiary powers on its holder, and thus typically involving much scrutiny to ensure those nominated for such commands would handle them properly.
